The Welsh Axemen

Welsh Axemen

As an Axe Racing Club we have been going over 30 years (since an Australian Touring Club visited the Royal Welsh Show in 1976). Although centered around Mid-Wales & The Borders we present Displays and participate in championships at Shows throughout the UK. No show is too big or small, we can adjust to meet the need. Ideally a ring should be no less than 25m square. Teams average 5 Axemen (or even 30+ for the big shows!).

What we do?

Cut through lengths of timber (using Axe or Saw) in either the fastest time, or (for Axe) minimum blows. The timber can be vertical (simulating a tree) or horizontal (the felled timber).  The wood used is mainly Popular, which is no longer in great demand for 'matches', which is good for us as it is an ideal wood for Axe cutting.
A spectacular show climax is the Tree Climb. Axemen climb a 12 foot pole (tree) using only an axe and foot boards. This is done by cutting a notch into the tree, and tip of board inserted into notch. Standing on board another (higher) notch is cut and board inserted, etc until top of tree reached. Then top is chopped off.
